The "Grand Championship Event" is, we believe, unique. It is an opportunity for competitors to show their skill in ALL aspects of tai chi by competing in an event that combines hand form, weapons form, push hands and full contact.

Scoring For The Grand Championship Event

Competitors will be awarded up to a maximum of 10 points in each of the four categories. The winner will be the contestant with the most points after adding up all of the four categories. The four categories will be

Tai Chi Hand Form

Points will be awarded to each competitor by a panel of judges in the same way, and using the same criteria, as for the normal hand form event. When these have been added up the winner will receive 10 Grand Championship points (GC points), the competitor in second place will receive 9 GC points, third place 8, fourth place 7 and so on down to tenth place who will receive 1 GC point. The remainder of the competitors will receive no points.

Tai Chi Weapon Form

This will be scored in the same way as the Tai Chi Hand Form category.

Moving Step Push Hands

Competitors will be placed in groups of three. This will be done on the basis of weight with the heaviest three in one group, the next heaviest three in the next group and so on. In each of these groups of three each competitor will compete against each of the other two(i.e. each competitor will have two bouts). The rules and scoring within each of these contests will be the same as for the normal moving step push hands events. If a competitor wins a bout they will receive 5 GC points and if they lose they will receive none. If the number of competitors does not evenly divide by three the organisers will, at their discretion, create one or more groups of four in this category. In these groups each competitor will still have two bouts (5 GC points for a win and none if they lose), each against a different opponent.

Full Contact

Each competitor will only have one fight in this category. Opponents will be paired on the basis of weight. The two heaviest competitors will be paired, then the next two and so on. The winner will be awarded 10 GC points, the loser none. In the event of a draw each competitor will receive 5 GC points. In the case of their being an odd number of competitors the organisers will, at their discretion, find a substitute opponent or award a bye (5 GC points) to the competitor with the lowest number of GC points so far (this will avoid such a bye having any effect on the overall outcome of the Grand Championship).

Rules For the Full Contact Fights

Groin guards, gum shields, head guards and gloves (all provided by the competitor) will be worn. No hand bandages may be worn. The gloves should be at least 10oz. The organisers reserve the right to disallow any equipment deemed unacceptable. No other protection is permitted.

Full contact to the front and side of the body and head with punches and kicks are allowed. Attacks are not permitted to the groin, throat, neck, joints or back. Repeated head attacks, head butts, knee and elbow attacks are not allowed. Safe throws and take downs are allowed within permitted three seconds.

There will be three, 2 minute, rounds with one minute intervals between each.

Scoring -

3 points for forcing opponent out of the area or for an effective safe throw/sweep or for knocking opponent down by kicking, pushing or punching.
2 points for a public warning, or where an opponent slips and falls.
1 point for a competitor failing to attack within 8 seconds.

At the conclusion of each round the round will be awarded to the contestant with the most points, or will be declared a draw. The winner of the contest will be decided on the basis of winning at least two of the three rounds (or one round if the other two are drawn), a knock out, retirement or disqualification of the opponent. If the score is one round each and one round drawn the result will be decided on the points accumulated over all three rounds. Otherwise if points are even the contest will be declared a draw.

General

In both the push hands and the full contact the organisers reserve the right to take whatever action they see fit to avoid "complete mis-matches". The form and push hands categories in the Grand Championship event will be judged separately from the other form and push hands events. Competitors in the Grand Championship event can, if they wish, enter the other form and push hands events. Competitors in the Grand Championship event must take part in ALL FOUR categories. The Grand Championship Event is only open to those aged eighteen and over.
