ZHONG DING NORTH WEST
[
SPRING/SUMMER NEWSLETTER ’99 [Greetings and welcome to a belated first edition of the Northwest newsletter for the final year of the twentieth century, including articles, reviews and up-to-date information on what’s happening during the middle part of this year, at home and abroad. We also have the next instalment of "Who’s Who In Zhong Ding".
The first Christmas intensive workshop for five years was a brilliant success and was well attended, bringing the 1998 training programme to a storming end. Students of all levels enjoyed this three-day event, which included workshops from across the whole taijiquan syllabus.
The New Year saw the departure of John for the Far East, and brought a New Arrival! Our heartiest congratulations to Martin and Jane Roberts down in Dorset on the arrival of Sophie Yasmin, who put in an appearance on January 4th.
There have already been several courses this year, which have hopefully set the trend for the rest of 1999. In addition to form courses - where students have the opportunity to spend time intensively learning (or deepening) a specific part of the taiji syllabus – there will be some mixed-speciality courses, such as the Sword & Push Hands course that was such a success in February.
Why train the whole syllabus? – Because each aspect of the Taiji syllabus has its own special qualities and emphases to teach.
Each of the five sections corresponds to one of the five elements; for example, the empty hand solo form corresponds to Earth, the Jian (straight sword) to Water, etc. It’s easy to pay attention to one’s Yong Quan, the Yin/Yang cross-over or the spine being suspended whilst inwardly focussed on training the hand form, whereas you may not be quite so aware of your surroundings - however in a room full of people with swords or long staffs, one’s awareness tends to be more outwardly focussed! Of course both these internal and external aspects should be evenly balanced.
It is true that if one practises any one part of the syllabus ‘correctly’ one has all the others. According to Master Cheng (Xu Shu Song) ‘…if you are adept at taiji’s empty hand form then you should be able to pick up any weapon and use it’ Obviously, this not the case for most people who say they can ‘do the form’, so these mixed-speciality training days will enhance and cross-reference various parts of the taiji syllabus not only for advanced students, but also for relative beginners who would like to broaden and deepen their Taiji experience.
Zhong Ding Grand Championship - BirminghamThis international Taiji competition, held in Birmingham on 28th February, formed the centrepiece (in the U.K.) of the celebrations of 10 years of Zhong Ding in our sunny Isles. The day was a resounding success, enjoyed by spectators and competitors alike.
The main focus of the competition was the ‘Grand Championship’ which required the contestants to demonstrate their skills in all aspects of the art of taijiquan, and consisted of four sections – empty hand form, weapon form, push hands and full contact fighting. The points for each section were combined to find the overall Grand Champion.
The contest was designed to be a celebration of the multi-faceted nature of our art in the tradition of Yang Lu Chan, founder of Yang style, who went to Beijing and took on all-comers to earn the title Yang Wu Di -Yang the Unsurpassed.
Congratulations to all who participated in the Grand Championship and helped taijiquan to take another step in establishing its reputation as an effective all-round art in the West, but especially to Kamal Lock of Wu style, who was the over winner.
The Grand Championship was complemented by conventional push hands and forms competitions for both internal and external martial artists, so there was plenty of activity to interest the spectators. In addition, there was a variety of stalls, selling an excellent array of books, videos, weapons, silk suits and other martial arts paraphernalia. Our old friend Dave Hawkins (Wah Lum Kung Fu) and his students enhanced the "Oriental-ness" of the occasion with an excellent lion dance - they’re one of the best lion dance teams in the west! A big thank you to the many people who came and supported the event, as well as to our students who "volunteered" to help out with the various jobs - CHEERS!!!
As a follow-up to the competition (and as part of this year’s instructor course), we are planning to hold a couple of festival/mini-competitions. The purpose of this is to raise the standard and quality of our instructors’ organisational, demonstration and judging skills, and equally to provide a chance for ordinary students to get together with other like-minded people from around the region/country in order to deepen the level of their training, have a fun time and extend their experience of our art. The first of these contents will probably be held on 4th July.
Instructor and First Aid Courses!!!
The 1999 instructor course is well underway, and for the first time contains an officially recognised teaching award. The course is being attended by representatives from almost every Zhong Ding region, including the North West, North East, East Midlands, West Midlands,Wales and Devon, and all instructors who do not already hold a first aid qualification are currently undertaking the intensive first aid course. Thanks are due to Colin Knightley, who has worked so hard behind the scenes.
N.B. In accordance with the organisation’s current guidelines will anyone currently teaching for the organisation who is not in possession of full Instructor Membership and Insurance please ensure that they are properly registered with immediate effect, or they will no longer be recognised as Zhong Ding instructors! The ‘Gold’ swords are £119 (instead of the usual £150), and ‘Silver’ swords are £99 (instead of £115). There are also English battle swords at £50. All of these Spanish-made swords have superbly-balanced blades that will even cut stone!
WHY NOT J *J *J *J *J TREAT YOURSELF!

We also have wooden fans at £19.95 and a couple of cane walking sticks and straight sticks at £8.00 each.
BOOKS (By V.H.)
CHENG MAN-CH’ING’S ADVANCED TAI-CHI FORM INSTRUCTIONS compiled and translated by Douglas Wile
Translated from Professor Cheng’s original Chinese manuals of his essays on tai chi theory, meditation and the I-Ching, painting and calligraphy, this book features specific form instructions and integral self-defence visualisations and is an invaluable reference-work for students seeking a deeper insight into the Cheng-style form.
AIKIDO & CHINESE MARTIAL ARTS - Volume Two by Tetsutaka Sugawara, Lujian Xing and Mark B. Jones
There are very few books in print on the subject of weapons, and this excellent guide to the use of weapons in Aikido and Chinese Martial Arts is well worth reading. Among the subjects covered are the components of Japanese and Chinese swords and their manufacture, the difference between body techniques and weapons training, and basic attack and defence methods of swordplay including footwork and distancing. The action is clearly illustrated throughout by sequential black and white photographs. (Thanks are due to Wudang instructor Steve Ford for finding this one!)
THINGS TO COME:
Workshop Programme (For full details and booking forms, see attached leaflets
Because of an extended European schedule and other commitments this year, there will only be a limited number of chances to learn the different disciplines from our comprehensive syllabus during 1999, the first of these being on April 17th/18th in Stretford when we will focus on San Shou (fast forms - mainly San Shou B) and Da Lu. May 15th/16th will provide probably the only opportunity this year to learn the 32-stepYang style Broadsword form - the first and easiest of the taiji weapons.
Our excellent North West camp this year will be held on 25th-27th June at spiffing new venues with access to excellent B & Bs for the softies! more refined among us. Don’t miss it!!!
Relax! On 13th June and 17th July there will two day-long workshops on massage for taijiers and non-taijiers alike. Another excellent way to de-stress and tone up!
If anyone fancies training in a more "exotic" location, then join us either in the North and South of España (20th May-4th June), or learn the Two-Person San Shou form - either in Switzerland (23rd-25th April) or just before the excellent "Rencontres Jasnieres" camp in France (July 20th- 22nd San Shou / 23rd - 25th camp). Besides instructing in France, John is also teaching at the Spanish Festival during the first week of September. Please ask for full details of any of these events.
As mentioned earlier, the first "get-together/mini-competition" is tentatively planned for the 4th July. This will give everyone a focus for enhancing their training, and should be fun! Prior to this, we are planning a few informal training days (12th and 19th or 20th June).
Many people have begun to realise that real proficiency in taiji comes with practice(!) and takes a little more that a once-weekly visit to class – especially when learning something new! A number of students have therefore requested that a second week-day class be held in the Stretford area, and we are looking into the possibility offering this on Friday evenings, either weekly or a couple of times a month,
Please note: as I am abroad teaching a lot this year, if you’re having private lessons with me, please try to book your time as much in advance as possible. Thanks! John.
As so many people kindly made donations to the monastery in India , and many have asked to be kept informed, my teacher Khordong Terchen Tulku of Tibet will be leading a retreat during the first two weeks of September in the U.K. If you would like more information, please contact me - John.
INSTRUCTOR PROFILE – JOHN GARDINER, FORMER CHAIRMAN OF ZHONG DING
I’ve been studying Taijiquan for around 12 years with Nigel, but my interest in fighting arts goes back a lot further. My father taught me how to box and "street survival" skills at an early age, and like many other school kids I went through the usual routine of trying out karate and judo, but somehow it just didn’t appeal.
However, from an early age I’d been interested in the Chinese culture. My family had close ties with a Chinese family through the course of three generations and I found I was at ease with the Chinese way of life. This interest in the culture didn’t cross over into the martial arts world until my early twenties, when I decided it would be a good idea to learn a martial art. I tried Wing Chun and one or two other styles, but was disappointed by what I was being taught. It either seemed impractical or, more often than not, the teacher was less than impressive!
Like many others who come to Taiji, I initially thought it was just some form of health exercise for old people in the park. You know the sort of thing, Chinese music in the background as the dawn mist swirls around the legs of lithe OAPs practising their art in the lush green park. I soon found out that this was an illusion! Not only was Taijiquan a practical martial art, but what’s more the OAPs were practising it wrongly – the Chinese music was written by some Englishman in Hackney, and the swirling mist was actually low-level ozone and urban pollution killing off the greenery in the park!
I started learning Taijiquan with the expectation that my teacher would be able to demonstrate the skills I had read in the Classics. Sadly, this wasn’t the case and I thought I was in danger of falling into another con job. At that point I became interested in the other "internal" Chinese arts of Xingyi and Bagua as they at least seemed definitive in their martial context. It was my interest in these arts that made me contact the BCCMA who in turn passed me on to Nigel Sutton’s teacher. My letter got lost for three months with Nigel’s teacher, until one day Mr. Sutton found it in a heap of papers. (Not quite the find in the salt shop, but pretty lucky as I’d forgotten I had even written the letter!)
That was about 12 years ago. At the time Nigel also was going through a bit of a Taiji crisis. While I was learning Bagua from him, his real love was Taiji, yet he couldn’t find anyone who could "walk the talk" in terms of demonstrating it as a real, practical fighting art. I remember he was on the verge of giving up at the time he married Feng, and went to live in Malaysia. It was there that he met Sifu Tan Ching Ngee, the first person he’d met who could use the art as a martial art.
Faith restored, I followed Nigel in learning Sifu Tan’s version of the Cheng Man-Ch’ing form. I vividly remember Nigel teaching the form to me on a cold night on a beach near Bognor ("spirit" weekends aren’t a new phenomenon!) about 12 years ago. I remember it because from the first time I practised the form, it somehow just seemed to be right for me. Since then, I’ve practised the Cheng form and syllabus. True, I am the only student in Zhong Ding to have learnt virtually every conceivable part of the syllabus and have to admit to forgetting most of it, but as Bruce Lee - the famous actor! - once said, "absorb what is useful!"
Aside from being Nigel’s eldest disciple, I also became a disciple of Sifu Tan Ching Ngee six years ago while training in Taiwan. My ceremony was pretty unusual in that it took place at Grandmaster Cheng’s tomb. I just hope he didn’t mind! I’m also disciple of Sifu Lau Kim Hong from Malaysia. I owe a great debt of thanks to both of these teachers for sharing their skills not just with me but with all of us in Zhong Ding. Most of all though, it’s been Nigel who has helped me to maintain my love of Taiji. He and Feng have been a great inspiration with their enthusiasm and devotion to developing the art.
That for me is one of the great things about Zhong Ding. While we strive to maintain our sense of heritage in the structure of the school, we’re not just paying lip service to some alien Chinese concept of family. At the end of the day, we really all are friends and do look out for each other. And we teach something that is practical and works. Since Zhong Ding was founded 10 years ago it has blossomed into a much bigger, more national – nay international – group, but that sense of friendship has never been lost. Long may it continue! John Gardiner
NEWSLETTERS
seem to be increasingly in vogue at the moment! Besides the regular Northwest oracle, the Spanish boys (mainly Eduardo!) are finding their way into numerous magazines as well as producing a regular newsletter, and rumour has it that both the Devon and North East areas of Zhong Ding are also hard at work on newssheets of their own! This is in addition to a flourishing of Zhong Ding websites around the world! The London site is mentioned below, the North East has one well underway and on a trip over from America, Chris Turner started a ‘Zhong Dao’ page for me, (as yet incomplete!) Chris’s own site in the US has won numerous awards! We should also soon be seeing the first Zhong Ding site in a Hispanic language! And finally …
There is information on Zhong Ding’s technical advisers - and much, much more! Try it!.
