ZHONG DING NORTH WEST

[ SUMMER NEWSLETTER ’99 [

Welcome to the Summer ‘99 edition of the newsletter for Zhong Ding in the North West - keeping you up-to-date with what’s been going on locally and around the country.

In this edition you’ll find a variety of informative articles, news of the "SENI ’99" Martial Arts Trade Show at the N.E.C. and a diary of forthcoming events, plus extra discounts on weapons, a new taiji music tape and reviews of the newest book releases.

Some membership cards have been sent out with this newsletter, so if you haven’t received yours yet, please be sure to check the envelope!

Our heartiest congratulations go to Kurt Eriksen, an American taiji student who has been training with John during his six-month stay in England, on the recent birth of his son, Eloy.

INSTRUCTOR COURSE

Congratulations are in order to all the instructors on this year’s course, who have successfully completed their St. John’s Ambulance First Aid Certificates. All students can now have nosebleeds, fainting spells and coronaries with complete confidence!

Enormous thanks go to the course tutor, Colin Knightley, for his tireless coaching and enormous patience (and for not laughing too much at our bandaging). A big thank-you also to real life "dummy", Andy Hague, for allowing himself to be ‘recovered’, resuscitated and bandaged to within an inch of his life! Finally, it was all made possible by good old "St. John", without whom we couldn’t have been ‘Certified’ (so to speak!)

SWITZERLAND – A FLYING VISIT!

In April, John and Vicky made a trip to La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland to the taiji school of leading Swiss instructor, Cornelia Gruber, to teach a weekend workshop on the San Shou two-person form.

The school is permanently sited within two attractive studios, each with its own stunning view of the Swiss mountain scenery - truly superb training facilities!

Although never having been to Switzerland in his life before last April, this was the second time that John found himself there in the same month, having attended a seminar led by his Buddhist teacher in Geneva some three weeks previously! It’s a small world!

Our thanks go to Cornelia, Milton, Alexa and Lyle for their warm hospitality and to Cornelia’s students for making us feel very welcome - but particularly to Alexa for sharing her intimate knowledge of the best shopping and hot chocolate haunts in town!

FOLLOWING – WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO

Or "Where’s my drink?" by Andy Hague.

Why do we behave the way we do in class? Why do we follow, to an extent, some of the Chinese modes of behaviour?

I’ve heard these questions from a number of people in the last six months so I thought I’d take a swing at them.

Coming from a Martial Arts background I found it easy to understand why we follow some Eastern ways in a class situation. We learned to cultivate manners and an appropriate way of behaving towards each other. We learned to show respect to the teacher, the teachings and to those who are senior in the lineage. The practical reason for this is simple – if you were rude to a classmate or caused them to lose face then it was more than likely that you would be hit! This was seen as a challenge! Under these circumstances you learn what is appropriate and what is not.

In a T’ai Chi class situation this is not always such a motivating factor. It is reasonably unlikely that someone will react that strongly - but not impossible.

Treat your fellow students with respect for their abilities and their knowledge. Cheng Man- Ch’ing said that everyone has something to teach that you can learn. Follow what they do and try to understand the reasons why. You may learn something.

Many western people find it difficult to surrender a sense of self to become part of a group and follow. We follow the teacher in the hand form whilst we can see them. What happens when you can’t see them?

In an eastern class you would follow the person in front in the direction you are moving. If you get lost then you have someone to follow who is moving at the same pace as you. If you carried on practising the form at your own pace then you will find that the class move at different speeds and are at different points in the form (In a weapons class you may get seriously hurt if you do not follow what everyone else does!). The group as a whole suffers for this!

Learn to work as a group and move as a group. This will help anyone who is not quite as sure as you, and will teach you something of humility by learning to surrender your emotional need to impose yourself on your surroundings.

One student asked why he had to cultivate Chinese manner when he himself was not Chinese? He was certain that he would still be taught by Chinese masters. We learn to behave in a certain way to each other and to the teacher so that we can be polite and respectful to the masters that we are fortunate to train with. If we are not polite by their standards and culture then we will lose face and we will not be taught! The key is flexibility! People are different and live by other ethics and codes than our own. By being flexible in approach, by being able to mentally relax, accept that cultures differ and learn how to behave in his culture, you can approach a master on his own terms and by his rules. You will gain face and he will respect you for it. He will be much more inclined to spend time with you to teach you.

Who would you be more inclined to teach? Someone who was polite and respectful and had taken time to learn your ways, or someone who is rude and will not behave in what you consider to be a civilised manner?

Learn to follow. Your Taiji can only get better for it.

"SENI ‘99" by V. Holden

A group of Zhong Ding instructors and students from the North West and Midlands went to check out the first ever business show for the martial arts industry, held at the N.E.C. in Birmingham on 22nd/23rd May, 1999. This first show was very much a pilot scheme; entry was free, and there were many ‘special offers’ on items for sale on the day.

Many leading suppliers were exhibiting, such as Kwon, Battle Orders and Cimac, and a Catwalk Area had been provided for displays by clothing and weapon manufacturers, who took full advantage with some well choreographed displays.

A small ‘Forum’ area provided a platform for lectures and presentations, including offerings from the British Council for Chinese Martial Arts, the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain, Sandy Holt a Muay Thai World Champion, and the Amateur Boxing Association - amongst others. The subject matter was diverse, including talks on Escrima, Japanese swords, nutrition, and martial arts fitness, together with book signings by various well-known martial artists.

A raised boxing ring area was the site for various displays, the most entertaining of which was Muay Thai Champion, Sandy Holt, with a team of kick boxers - one as young as five!

The main arena featured displays of kung fu, karate, Tang Soo Do, Kuk Sul Won and a demonstration of martial arts for the disabled by ‘Martial Hearts’. Two of the best displays featured Pentjak Silat with Jak Othman (who is based in Malaysia), and a demonstration of Escrima by a couple of well-padded exponents who were standing in as replacements for Pat O’Malley, who was unfortunately unable to attend.

However, the most disappointing showing came from the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain, who followed up a lacklustre presentation in the Forum with an apparently under-rehearsed display in the main Display Area – neither of which we felt presented the art of taijiquan in a particularly positive light.

The T.C.U.G.B. was represented at the event by members of its Technical Panel, namely Dan Docherty (with one of his students), Ronnie Robinson, Chris Thomas and Bob Lowie, who appeared for their performance in various uncoordinated styles of street clothing, including blue jeans and a woolly cardigan! Unfortunately, this compared rather unfavourably with other demonstrators who had made a little more effort with their appearance. Little use was made of the P.A. which was available in the display area, leaving the audience wondering exactly what it was they were watching, as the team variously performed sword (with an extendable practise weapon instead of a true blade), hand-form, fan and push hands patterns. This should have been an opportunity to showcase the various styles and weapons of taijiquan for the general public and to widen the appeal of the art. However without some sort of commentary, the display did little to educate, and those spectators who had hoped to learn more about taijiquan would have left the arena none the wiser!

Overall, Seni ’99 was worth a visit; there were some entertaining displays and a few of us succumbed to the odd purchase or two! More high profile guest speakers, together with seminars and workshops are promised for future years, so this could turn out to be a welcome regular addition to the martial arts calendar.

RETURN JOURNEY TO ESPANA by John Higginson

At the end of May, I made a two-week return visit to Spain, which this time included a trip to the South of the country.

On arriving in Madrid, I was taken to an executive meeting of the new martial arts association (similar to the BCCMA, but covering all styles) which is being set up as the governing body for martial arts in Spain. The meeting was held at the school of a senior Chinese instructor, and it was good to have the opportunity to meet him and to push hands later in the evening with him and his students. Thanks are also due to our good friend Julian Mora for his hospitality during our time in the city.

There then followed an overnight train journey north for a week-long stay in beautiful Asturias, where workshops were held in Mieres (broadsword form and applications) and Oviedo (moving step pushing hands and da lu). The Oviedo workshop was held on a Bank Holiday, and it unfortunately slipped the mind of the hall’s owner that we were coming, resulting in a three-hour training session in the picturesque setting of the local park! An evening class was also held on the coast in Aviles, and my thanks are due to Marie-Jesus and the other students for their warm welcome and their enthusiasm.

A big thank-you also to David and Carmen Rodriguez for their hospitality and kindness during my stay with them in Oviedo, also to Eduardo and Cristina Monteiro, with whom I spent several days. Cristina is an extremely talented artist, who specialises in engravings (many examples of which are available for sale here in Manchester; please ask if you’re interested), and she kindly invited me to the opening of a shop owned by her agent in Gijon - a town which appeared to be populated largely by surfers, mountain bikers and artists due to its wonderful coastal and mountain scenery!

We then drove south to teach a half-day straight sword workshop in Palencia, with our old friend, Juanjo, before making the long drive to the southern tip of Spain to Marbella, where I had been invited to teach a workshop for Antonio Cobo. Over the next few days, a mixed group of taiji beginners, teachers and assorted martial artists were introduced to the full spectrum of taijiquan - in between swimming and relaxing! (It’s easy to see why this area has become such a popular holiday resort!) Then finally, it was back to Madrid, where I enjoyed the hospitality of Nino Rodriguez, whom we would like to welcome as a junior instructor for Zhong Ding Espana in Madrid.

It is encouraging to see the progress being made by the Spanish students, due at least in part, to the fact that they train at least a couple of times a week - as opposed to the U.K. where once weekly is often the norm! (See details of the new class opening in Stretford on Thursday evenings under the class listings at the end of this newsletter!!!)

NIGEL SUTTON WORKSHOPS

Master Nigel Sutton, founder of Zhong Ding International, will be in Britain during September and will be holding a series of seminars throughout the Country. Nigel spends his time teaching and training at his home in Malaysia, and return visits to Europe are a comparatively rare event!

Nigel will visit the north of England to conduct day-long workshops in Manchester (on the 18th) and Huddersfield (on 19th). All students - whatever their level of experience - are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to benefit from Nigel’s wealth of experience, gained over many years of training both in Europe and the Far East.

REFLEXOLOGY TRAINING DAYS

We have invited Beverley Alexander, one of the country’s leading reflexologists, to come to Manchester in the autumn to teach two days of reflexology (provisionally in October and November). The workshops will feature ‘Reflexology as First-Aid’, and will focus on hand rather than foot treatment. No previous experience is necessary in order to participate, however due to the nature of the course, places have to be limited to a maximum of ten students - so if you are interested, please let us know immediately!

THE ZHONG DING NATIONAL MAGAZINE

Now available (at the modest cost of 60p!) are copies of the National Zhong Ding newsletter, created by Ace Editor ‘Spanner’, containing a variety of articles, instructor profiles (in this edition, Vincent Jones, Zhong Ding’s Chairman), also reviews, book extracts and even a crossword! Also included is a complete listing of the winners of all categories at the Zhong Ding Grand Championships. Copies are available now from your instructor.

LONG-AWAITED AUDIO TAPES

Audio tapes featuring two pieces of music to accompany the practise of hand or weapons forms will shortly be available at the modest price of £6.00 (£4.00 for Zhong Ding members). They have beautiful full-colour covers, and the playing time is approximately 25 minutes each side.

AUTUMN RETREATS

During the first two weeks in September, John will be in mid-Wales at a retreat led by his Buddhist teacher. It is rare for such a high Tibetan Lama to visit these shores, and several students have asked to be kept in touch with such events. If you require further details, please ask John Higginson.

Following neatly on from the above article, please note that we are again holding our Autumn taiji retreat in Bonnie Scotland, in the peaceful setting of Samye Ling, the beautiful Buddhist temple situated in the Lowlands near Eskdalemuir. See the attached leaflet.

ZHONG DING MEMBERSHIP AND INSURANCE

We have added a new category of North West membership for people who are not actually members in our region, but who wish to receive our newsletter. This is because a significant demand has developed for our excellent news-sheet from other Zhong Ding regions (and also from non-Zhong Ding members!). It will cost £5.00 per annum to receive the newsletter for the year (usually three or four issues), to cover the cost of production and postage.

If this box contains a cross, your membership is due. // Or if you are not a North West Z.D. member but still wish to receive the newsletter, it is £5.00 per annum.

DATE

NB: Your membership card should contain your photo and a ZDNW stamp; if it doesn’t, please return it together with a passport-sized photo so it can be stamped as an official authorisation.

Instructor insurance: In our continuing attempt to raise and ensure the standard and quality of Zhong Ding instructors, it has been noted that a few people who teach under the Z.D. name have not yet attended at least two Instructor level courses during the year. This was a condition introduced last year by Nigel Sutton for those wishing to continue to be registered and insured as Zhong Ding instructors. (Please take note anyone currently teaching taiji for the organisation).

And finally …
Don't forge

t this is YOUR newsletter. It needs you to provide stories, training tips, event reports and up-dates to the calendar. Also, if you have access, do use the Z.D. web site. It can be reached on: http://www.zhong-ding.com.

2 PERSON SAN SHOU

August 21st – 22nd 1999

This two-day workshop will provide the student with an opportunity to learn the complete Yang-style two-person fast form.

This flowing sequence, which is extremely enjoyable to perform, could even be described as "Applications in Action" and is most helpful in guiding the student to a deeper understanding of the applications of the empty hand form.

You will learn, with the aid of your partner, how to guide forces without going "force against force", the necessity for flexible footwork, and the importance of ranges. The study of San Shou is particularly appropriate to those wishing to improve their understanding of the practice of "pushing hands".

APPLICATIONS OF THE TAIJI FORM

1pm – 5pm Sun 7th August 1999

To have some idea of the meaning of the moves of Taiji hand forms is essential. The ideal of the form is to focus and harmonise the mind and body, whether for good health or self-defence. So "if one does not have some understanding of the postures how can one have correct focus in the form?" This day will give a good understanding of both the simplicity and the intricacies of Taiji applications.

13 SWORD SECRETS DAY

LEARN JIAN - STRAIGHTSWORD

1pm-5pm Saturday 1st October 1999

This workshop is designed to give students the opportunity to become familiar with handling the sword or to build on existing skills. It is particularly appropriate for those intending to learn the 54 jian form and also excellent for those already familiar with sword work. Beginners or advanced students are invited to get to grips with the intricacies of this part of the tai chi curriculum.

Venue: Scout Hut, (next to 184) Kings Road, Firswood, Manchester M16

Presents

JIAN - THE CHINESE

STRAIGHT SWORD

With Master Instructor John Higginson

16th – 17th October, 1999

Through hundreds of years of Chinese history, the Jian has featured prominently as a symbol of office and position for scholars and the gentry, as well as a magic instrument for China’s Daoist magicians and exorcists.

The form presented on this weekend seminar is that handed down by the Yang family to Grandmaster Cheng Man Ching and consists of 54 postures. Study of this form provides a solid foundation for further study of this fascinating weapon and gives the exponent an understanding of the graceful way in which the thirteen sword secrets are embodied in its practice. Study of the straight sword develops and enhances the exponent’s agility, sensitivity and ability to use flexible footwork, all of which are vital to the taijiquan practitioner’s overall development.

OPEN TO ALL: Two instructors will be provided to enable students to work at their own pace.

VENUE: Scout Hut, (next to 184) Kings Road, Stretford. Manchester

TIME: Saturday, 1 p.m - 5.30 p.m, Sunday 10.00 a.m. - 4.00 p.m.

COST: £50.00 (£40/£35)
